Special Education Department

Credentialed special education teachers and special education instructional assistants provide specialized academic instruction to students with mild/moderate disabilities in multiple models that may include:

·        Consultation with general education staff regarding implementation of goals and objectives

·        Services in the general education classroom (special education teacher or instructional assistant push-in)

·        Individual and small group instruction (pull-out with special education teacher or instructional assistant)

·        Co-teaching core classes with a general education teacher to specially designed instruction

·        Specialized academic instruction in classes with a special education teacher for the majority of the school day

Student time in any of these setting will vary and be specified in an IEP including special education needs (strategies and techniques to ameliorate the impact of the disability on the student’s progress in general education setting). In most cases, a general education teacher will provide the first level of academic support for students with disabilities. Special Education staff will provide additional support and intervention based on each student’s assed needs and IEP goals utilizing universal access with grade appropriate core curriculum as well as supplemental and intervention materials. Students who require intensive intervention services may spend the majority of their day in a special education setting.

To equip students for life after high school, the IEPT develops an individual transition plan (ITP) for each student during his/her freshman year and review it annually until the student is no longer age eligible for special education services. The goals and objectives during high school are based on each student’s individual transition plan.
